Trout Creek and Smith Rock, OR
09.04.10 - 09.06.10
Emiko and I spent an incredible Labor Day in Oregon climbing at both Trout Creek and Smith Rocks—it was awesome. At Trout Creek we met many new friends, and at Smith Rocks we were able to meet up with friends old and new. It was truly a special and spectacular climbing weekend.
The Deschutes River from the approach to the Trout Creek climbing area.
The awesome basalt pillars that form the splitter cracks.
Emiko scoping out the climbing.
Eric leading the climb JR Tolken – 5.10.
Emiko following.
Emiko sending some stellar twin splitter cracks—think this was called Fissuremen – 5.10-.
Emiko sending Mr. Squiggles – 5.10 (any guesses as to why it's called Mr. Squiggles?).
Emiko: happy, happy!
Eric leading Goldrush – 5.10-; this climb takes several gold Camalots, hence the name.
Interesting geology.
Lunch.
Emiko sending Bushwacker – 5.10.
The climbing at Trout Creek is not for the weak—almost all the climbs here are quite difficult.
Emiko on the way back to camp.
On our third and last day, we drove further South to Smith Rocks—gorgeous!
Emiko leading Moonshine Dihedral – 5.9; a superb climb.
Eric leading Karate Crack – 5.10 (I lead this climb twice and followed it once all on the same day; yes, there is a story behind these ascents).
It was pretty hot—here Emiko gets creative (or desperate?) in her pursuit of some shade.
Emiko leading Lion's Jaw – 5.8.
Eric pushing his grade on an attempt of Chain Reaction – 5.12c.
We climbed until dusk an then started the 6 hour drive back to Seattle.
